Six-month jail sentence for Jones

American Olympian Marion Jones has been sentenced to six months in prison for lying about steroid use and involvement in a drugs fraud case.

The former sprinter pleaded guilty last October and was sentenced on Friday.
Mother-of-two Jones, 32, had asked US District Judge Kenneth Karas to be "as merciful as a human being can be".
But the judge imposed the maximum under her plea deal "because of the need for general deterrence and the need to promote respect for the law".
Judge Karas said he believed a message needed to be sent to athletes who have abused drugs and as a result, have overlooked the values of "hard work, dedication, teamwork and sportsmanship".
"Athletes in society have an elevated status, they entertain, they inspire, and perhaps, most important, they serve as role models."

He added: "Nobody is above the legal obligation to tell the truth."

Afterwards Jones said outside court: "I respect the judge's order, and I truly hope that people will learn from my mistakes."

Decisions For India Over Identity Of New Test Captain
Mahendra Singh Dhoni - India's next Test captain?
Last week saw Cricket Australia choose Phil Jaques as Matthew Hayden’s opening partner but this week’s big cricketing decision will come in two days when the Indian selectors announce who will captain their Test side against Pakistan.India, still without a coach, have been without a Test captain since Rahul Dravid resigned last month to concentrate on his batting and whoever gets the job will then have to take charge in the not-so-insignificant series against neighbours and fierce rivals Pakistan. Who then, are in the frame?Not Sachin Tendulkar, who has ruled himself out of contention, which leaves wicket-keeper Mahendra Singh Dhoni as the favourite. Although Dhoni has led the side admirably in Twenty20 and one-day cricket, he is still relatively inexperienced at Test level, with just 20 games under his belt. A talented cricketer and tactician he may be, but it may be seen as a gamble to install him as captain with so few Tests under his belt.And will the selectors think that by asking him to captain and keep wicket in all forms of the game they could be overburdened, and if so, do they ask Dinesh Karthik to don the gloves in Tests, or ask someone else to skipper the side.If so, who else is in with a chance? His vice-captain in the one-day side, Yuvraj Singh, has been mentioned as a possibility, but at the moment, he is not an automatic Test pick and his inclusion would entail breaking up what is an already mighty impressive middle-order line up.If we can rule Yuvraj out due to him not being able to hold down a regular spot, then we can do the same for Mohammad Kaif, who would, in any case, be an outside bet but he has at least been leading the India A side with some success. Perhaps he will be in line the next time there is a vacancy.VVS Laxman might enter the selectors thoughts – not only is he a masterful batsman, but he has a wealth of experience, and, even if he were picked only to captain for one or two series, he may be seen as the safe option. Laxman as captain for the remainder of the year, with Dhoni his deputy before taking over for good in 2008 might be a compromise that would stand India in good stead for the future.One other possible is Anil Kumble – another man with a wealth of experience, and one with as many Test centuries as the much-heralded Dhoni (one). As captain of Karnataka, he already has leadership experience, and indeed he is used to captaining one RS Dravid, something the new incumbent will also have to do, although more players than not in the Indian side have captained it at some point or another.It is difficult, as ever, to pre-empt exactly what the board will do – if they invest in the future, then expect Dhoni to be their choice, but if they have any reservations about his inexperience, then it is anybody’s guess, and potentially anybody’s captaincy.Cricket World readers plumped for Mike Hussey as Australia’s new opener, which was ignored by Cricket Australia. Lampard still not fit

Frank Lampard has been ruled out of England's Euro 2008 qualifier against Israel on Sunday with a thigh injury although the midfielder has a 50-50 chance of being fit to face Russia next week.
Lampard, who scored his 13th goal for England in last month's 2-1 home defeat by Germany in a friendly, missed training on Wednesday and returned to his Premier League club for treatment on a torn thigh muscle.
"We looked at the scans and liaised with Chelsea," England head coach Steve McClaren told a news conference at the squad's hotel in Hertfordshire, north of London.
"We've sent him back to the club, he's rehabbing there. The injury is not as serious as first thought and we're hopeful of assessing him on Saturday.
"There's a 50-50 chance he may be ready for next week. We're giving him every chance to be available for us."
England face Russia at Wembley in a qualifier on Wednesday.
Gerrard improving
The news was better for fellow midfielder Steven Gerrard, who is expected to have recovered from a hairline fracture on a toe in time to play against the Israelis at Wembley.
"I'm very, very confident that Stevie G will be with us on Saturday for what is a very important game," McClaren said.
"He wants to play, I want him to play, the team does, the fans do. The whole country does.
"We're assessing it day by day. Hopefully, by the end of the week we'll have a better idea but we'll leave it as late as possible."
England captain John Terry and Owen Hargreaves also missed training but were expected to be back with the rest of the squad on Thursday.
Terry was unwell while, like Gerrard, Hargreaves had gym sessions instead of working out with the other players at London Colney.
England are already without injured Wayne Rooney, David Beckham and Gary Neville as well as the suspended Peter Crouch for this weekend's Group E match.
England are fourth in the standings and trail leaders Croatia by three points.

Lanka confident of beating Pakistan

The New Zealand match was our first tough outing and a real challenge for us. We were therefore delighted to win so comprehensively. It leaves us full of confidence as we prepare for the Super Eights, the start of this tournament’s business end. I think we are adjusting quite well to the specific demands of the Twenty20 format, and we’re certainly learning fast. However, we also all know that you cannot afford to take anything for granted in this form of the game and we cannot afford to let our performance drop.

i was really pleased with the bowlers against New Zealand. The guys were very disciplined, consistently putting the ball in the right areas and conceding very few extras. We bowled especially well in the first six Powerplay overs, a crucial part of any innings. Vaasy was characteristically tight and Dilhara bowled an excellent length and also used his variations intelligently. The end result was that New Zealand were never able to build up momentum and we were left chasing a modest target

There were a couple of mishaps in the field, an area where we can improve on, but it is quite difficult to have a perfect game in Twenty20 cricket. The most important thing is that we are getting in the groove, learning fast and enjoying it. The game is fast and furious and you have to be cool under pressure. Crucially, I think, you also have some fun. It helps you relax and perform to the best of your ability. Our tactics and strategies have worked for us so far, which is good news. Prior to the tournament we talked a lot about tactics and gameplan. We soon realized which plans were going to be most effective. But we’ll have to stay flexible because every opponent poses different challenges. We can expect to just breeze through the tournament playing out the same gameplan. I’m sure there will be challenges ahead that will force us to adapt. Our next opponent is Pakistan and we all know just how dangerous they can be when on-song. They have some brilliant match-winners and we’ll need to be very disciplined, making sure we keep cool and stick to our own gameplan. If we play smart cricket and minimize our mistakes then I am confident we can beat them. Likewise, Bangladesh, are no longer a team to be taken lightly, especially in this highly unpredictable format. But we’ll not be thinking too far ahead and right now Pakistan is our focus. We are fortunate to be playing in Johannesburg where we have played all our matches thus far and therefore know the conditions well. We’ve also been able to settle in one location rather than racing around the country. This helps the guys relax – today some of them were off to a game park. It’s so important to be able to switch off and get out of the team hotel when on tour. The management staff have also been enjoying themselves, getting to know the guys after taking over from Tom Moody, Trevor Penney and CJ. They are really enthusiastic and have been working hard. Trevor (Baylis) is probably a little quieter than Tom – possibly because he is still observing and familiarizing himself with the way we work – but otherwise there have been few changes. They expect us to work hard and they’ve been pushing us all to improve ourselves all the time.
